A traveling Winvy merchant -- who has gone by many names, but who she knows as Mr. Beauregard Chancy -- saw the potential of her idea when she chased him down at the market fair one day. He agreed to put her through sorcery school in exchange for the exclusive right to sell her invention once she has a working model.

"There's nothing Greta loves more than a good thunderstorm. She goes out in them to take notes whenever she can; she'll drag herself out in her pajamas, if she has to. You must first understand something to tame it, and after three years, Greta understands lightning as much as anyone can. Still, the pouring rain and rolling thunder relax her, so she continues studying anyway.
Storms have always been her friend. Once, when she was very young, she fell asleep reading by candlelight. The wax dripped onto her straw bed, and in minutes, her home went up in flames. Only a passing thundercloud saved her family's lives. She'll never forget how bright the lightning was that split the sky that night.
She's chased it ever since."
